Farmington Downtown Development Authority
Board of Directors
There is currently one vacancy on the Farmington Downtown Development Authority board.
JT Buck, Mayor
Tom was elected Mayor of the City of Farmington by his peers in 2009 and joined the DDA board in March, 2010.
Tom and his wife, Karen, reside in Farmington.
Dave Cornwell
Dave?s roots in Farmington go back to the late 1950s when he moved here as a young boy with his family.
He serves on the Board of Directors for the Farmington/Farmington Hills Chamber of Commerce as well as numerous other community service organizations.
He is a past president of the Michigan chapter of the National Association of Corporate Real Estate Executives, a position held during his 25-year career in corporate finance, real estate and investment management. He holds a degree in finance and economics from the University of Michigan .
As the owner of Suburban Real Estate Group in Downtown Farmington, Dave is actively involved in both the residential and commercial Farmington real estate markets. He is a partner and managing member of a number of commercial properties in and around Farmington . His client list includes many Farmington residents, as well as the family of Governor Fred M. Warner, a relationship that spans more than 25 years.
Dave was appointed to Farmington?s DDA Board in 2007. He believes his background in real estate and property management will be useful in continuing to move Downtown Farmington forward.
Greg has been involved in the Farmington Main Street Program from its inception and is past chairman of the DDA?s Economic Restructuring Committee. Greg, his wife Maureen and Greg?s brothers are Farmington residents and shareholders in John Cowley & Sons. This second-generation family business is one of Downtown Farmington?s best known establishments.
Greg holds a Bachelor of Science degree in finance from the University of Detroit. When not busy with Cowley?s he is employed at ADP managing the National Account Sales Team in Michigan.
Team Cowley is committed to success and the rebirth of Farmington.
Chuck Frost
Chuck is no stranger to the world of community promotion. He developed and runs the Thumb Area Tourism Council, which is a non-profit organization. He has been involved with the Economic Restructuring Committee, but visited other committee's before determining that ER was the best fit for him. He became a board member in 2009.
Chuck would like the DDA and the City to become more progressive in seeking grant funding, which he claims is 60 percent networking and 40 percent administration.
The Frost family moved to Downtown Farmington after spending nearly 30 years in Farmington Hills. Chuck and his wife frequently can be seen walking through Farmington's neighborhoods.
Dan Higgins, Secretary
Owner of Visibles Marketing, a marketing company located in downtown Farmington, Dan Higgins wanted to become more involved in the pulse of the community. He joined the Marketing and Promotions Committee and was appointed later to the DDA board in 2008.
Dan was the great mind behind the video series created to promote the streetscape project. He was determined that the community would be informed about the project, in terms of education and promotion. Now, he seems to have caught the video bug, because he is often found behind the camera. Dan is the producer of the new Farmington 15 News program.
He has an undergraduate degree in economics and accounting from Xavier University and a Master's degree in health administration.
Dan and his wife live with their family dog in Farmington Hills
Walter Gajewski
Walt is a new face on the DDA board, but not to progress in Farmington. He has spearheaded many key projects and events, including the Sundquist Pavilion and Riley Park, the Harvest Moon Dance and the Farmers Market.
Walt is an engineer at Chrysler and claims to be a small-town guy. He is looking forward to helping develop the community's brand and more significant downtown events. "It's nice to live in a community where you know the business owners and the city leaders on a first-name basis."
Another way Walt contributes to Farmington is by maintaining his home in the Historic District, an 1826 Greek Revival.
Michele Jakacki
Michele was reappointed the DDA board in 2008 after an 18-year hiatus and has been going non-stop since.
She serves on the Economic Restructuring Committee and is focused on bringing new businesses into Farmington. It was the beauty and community which attracted Michele and her husband to Farmington over thirty-five years ago when they decided to open Focal Point Studios of Photography in a 300 square foot room. The business has grown into its present location on Grand River Avenue. The studio often arranges photo shoots at Farmington locations, including the Governor Warner Mansion.
In addition to ER, Michele plays an active role in the Founders Festval and is considered the Den Mother of volunteer headquarters. She believes Farmington is a real family community and that the downtown offers more potential for restaurants with outdoor seating.
Michele and her husband, Jerry, raised three children in their Farmington Hills home.
James Kuiken, Vice-President
James, a vehicle engineer at Ricardo, Inc., and his wife, Kristin, live blocks away from Downtown Farmington. "Farmington has a small-town feel, yet it?s minutes from the freeway and 30 minutes from most anything in metro-Detroit? says Kuiken.
Appointed to the DDA Board of Directors in 2005 as a resident member, James serves as Vice-President and is chairman of the DDA?s Economic Restructuring (ER) Committee. This involvement has enabled him to be part of higher level discussions between the DDA and the City of Farmington concerning parking issues and proposed solutions as well as business recruitment and retention.
There are similarities between Downtown Farmington and Old Town in Ft. Collins, Colorado, where James grew up. Through vision and hard work, Old Town, was revitalized. James knows that can happen right here in Downtown Farmington. With Farmington?s tremendous pride and outstanding volunteers, he sees visible, continued progress toward a better, more vibrant downtown.
Bob is a resident of Farmington. He grew up in Farmington Hills and has lived in the area since 1964. A graduate of Wayne State University Mortuary School, he is the owner of Thayer-Rock Funeral Home which was established in Downtown Farmington in 1933.
Bob was appointed to the DDA in 2007. Bob thinks "it is important that we support the businesses in our community and make an effort to shop and dine in our Downtown".
Steven was appointed to the Farmington Downtown Development Authority Board of Directors in March 2006. He also has been a volunteer on the DDA?s Main Street Design Committee. As Principal of S3 Architecture, PLLC with offices in Downtown Farmington, he has provided valuable input to that committee. He also operates the Farmington Development Group, LLC which is responsible for the development of Downtown Farmington?s The Orchard Condominiums.
Steven teaches architectural design at Lawrence Technological University and has chaired the Farmington Zoning Board of Appeals and the Main Street Design Committee. He has lived in the historic district of Farmington with his wife Jennifer and three daughters since 1999.
