Downtown Farmington Press Corps Takes Top Honors at MSOC Event

Farmington, MI. (May 14, 2012). The Downtown Farmington Press Corps has great news to share. And, unlike its customary topics like events or projects, the news involves bragging rights.

At the Friday, May 4th Main Street Main Event, hosted by Main Street Oakland County, the Press Corps took top honors in the Outstanding Public Relations Effort award category.

“What an achievement for this tremendous team of volunteers,” exclaimed Annette Knowles, Executive Director of the Farmington Downtown Development Authority. “In just one year, the Press Corps progressed from being an idea to becoming recognized as a best practice.”

Formed in late 2010 through the DDA’s Organization Committee, the Press Corps is comprised of talented writers who compose articles about newsworthy downtown happenings. Current members of the Corps include: Pat Shelton, Lead, and writers Melissa Andrade, MJ Hrutkay, Nancy Kilner, Tina Bozza and Jennifer Chinn.

The Press Corps is the first such sub-committee to be formed to assist the DDA in promotion of events and activities, primarily by writing media releases. Members of the Press Corps are involved in other writing projects, including producing the Main St. Messenger, the DDA’s bi-annual newsletter, and other printed literature, such as Market Fresh, the monthly Farmers Market newsletter.

In its inaugural year, the Press Corps completed more than a third of the media releases issued by the DDA, which topped 100 in 2011. Nearly all releases received local coverage.

After a year of documenting releases, the DDA now has a comprehensive timeline that will serve as a reference tool for writing articles in the future.

"I am so proud that in our first full year of existence this group of volunteer writers made a significant contribution in getting out the good news about Downtown Farmington,” praised Pat Shelton.

The Press Corps actively is seeking additional writers to join the team. You can contribute as your time permits, whether than be a single release or adopting an entire event. “If you would like to become a part of this wonderful writing crew, please reach us at the DDA office,” stated Knowles.

Farmington, MI (April 25, 2012) -- The Farmington Downtown Development Authority has been designated as an accredited National Main Street Program for meeting the commercial district revitalization performance standards set by the National Trust Main Street Center®. Each year, the National Trust and its partners announce the list of accredited Main Street® programs that have built strong revitalization organizations and demonstrate their ability in using the Main Street Four-Point Approach® methodology for strengthening their local economy and protecting their historic buildings.

“We congratulate this year’s nationally accredited Main Street programs for meeting our established performance standards,” says Doug Loescher, director of the National Trust Main Street Center. “Accredited Main Street programs are meeting the challenges of the recession head on and are successfully using a focused, comprehensive revitalization strategy to keep their communities vibrant and sustainable.”

The organization’s performance is annually evaluated by Main Street Oakland County, which works in partnership with the National Trust Main Street Center to identify the local programs that meet 10 performance standards. These standards set the benchmarks for measuring an individual Main Street program’s application of the Main Street Four-Point Approach® to commercial district revitalization. Evaluation criteria determines the communities that are building comprehensive and sustainable revitalization efforts and include standards such as developing a mission, fostering strong public-private partnerships, securing an operating budget, tracking economic progress, and preserving historic buildings. For more information on the national program accreditation program, visit http://www.preservationnation.org/main-street/about-main-street/the-programs/national-programs.html.

“We are honored to earn our accreditation again,” stated Annette Knowles, DDA Executive Director. “The work of our volunteers is amazing and their dedication to the community is unquestionable. The list of bright spots that were included in our evaluation are too numerous to mention in its entirety, but it’s a true group effort that adds value to the community.”

Knowles added that evaluators were impressed with the novel approach that the DDA uses to accomplish work planning and with the formation of the Downtown Farmington Press Corps.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation, a privately funded nonprofit organization, works to save America’s historic places to enrich our future. www.PreservationNation.org.

New DDA Officers Ready to Act; Outgoing Veep Notes Positive Change

The Farmington Downtown Development Authority has elected its officers for 2012 at its annual meeting, held on Monday, March 26.
Returning to leadership roles are President Robert Rock, resident and owner of Thayer-Rock Funeral Home and Secretary Dan Higgins, owner of Visibles Marketing.
Rounding out the slate of officers as new Vice-President is Melissa Andrade, resident and owner of Silver Tree Yoga.
The trio is expected to continue to navigate the DDA through bright spots and challenges. Pressures from reductions in resources will remain a factor as the organization strives to fulfill its mission to create and promote the place of Downtown Farmington.
“I appreciate the continued support and confidence of the DDA board and I will work hard, making our downtown a better place. Economic development and supporting our merchants will remain a high priority for this board. Our events will attract thousands of visitors to the downtown and our merchants will see continued success,” commented Rock, whose is entering his third year as President.
The opportunity to carry on the recent successes led Andrade to consider accepting the Vice-Presidency, a position which assumes the responsibilities in absence of the President. She steps up after completing her first year of service as a board member.
Andrade lauded the efforts of the DDA, past and present. “I feel fortunate to have come onto the board at a time when our Downtown is blossoming – we’ve experienced a wildly successful farmers market this past year, which is back-dropped by the city’s new streetscape.”
“Today, I walked downtown to look at the DIA’s Inside:Out exhibit. These are all the results of the hard work, passion and dedication of the DDA. I am honored to serve on a board that moves our community forward in such a positive way.”
Higgins returns as Secretary, a position he has held for two years. “The Farmington DDA is important to the vitality of this community during such challenging times. It’s important for me as a business owner to step forward and work to help other businesses succeed.”
After serving two years as Vice-President, Steven Schneemann, resident and owner of S3 Architecture, has opted to focus on his role as Chairperson of the DDA’s Main Street Design Committee. Work to prepare and review concepts for redevelopment and streetscape projects is expected to remain steady in the forthcoming year.
“It has been an honor to serve in the VP role alongside President Bob Rock for the past two years. The position has allowed me to provide support to the DDA President as we have transitioned from a period of positive, rapid and substantive changes within the DDA to a period of sharpening focus on some of our ongoing core efforts.”
Rock, Andrade and Higgins’ year-long leadership positions were effective following the completion of the election.

Farmington, MI. (March 22, 2012) The Farmington Downtown Development Authority announced the winner of its 2011 Mary Martin Service Award on March 13. For the first time in award history, the recipient was a team rather than an individual. Diane Cassidy and her staff at Farmington's Salon Legato – Team Legato – won the award for their work with hosting Alley Regalley, a fund raising event co-hosted by the Greater Farmington Area Chamber of Commerce. The event is held during the Downtown Farmington Founders Festival.

The Mary Martin Service Award is given annually to a volunteer in the Main Street Program who has exhibited exemplary service to downtown Farmington. In 2011, Alley Regalley raised $2,500 for the Farmington/Farmington Hills After-School Program.

The award presentation was held at the seventh annual volunteer celebration, Farmington Friends and Fettuccini. Nearly 100 active volunteers packed Luigi’s Trattoria in downtown Farmington to celebrate a successful 2011.

Also nominated for the award were: volunteer of 50 years, Carol Kurth; husband and wife duo, Jeff and Audrey Brown; event food and beverage coordinator, Mike Kuntz; Founders Festival entertainment coordinator Sarah Dickey; and Farmers Market assistant, Bill McNeil, with sidekick Dodger.

“We recognize the dedication and hard work of all volunteers,” said Annette Knowles. “It’s great to be able to spend an evening recognizing all of them.”

The Farmington DDA has grown its volunteer database to include more than 200 volunteers, but is still in search of helpful people. To kick off the 2012 calendar of events, a volunteer pep rally is tentatively slated for May 15. Anyone is welcome to come and assess the volunteer opportunities.

Farmington DDA to Host Volunteer Appreciation, Announces Nominees for Volunteer of Year

FARMINGTON, MI (March 1, 2012). The Farmington Downtown Development Authority (DDA) will announce the recipient of its 2011 Mary Martin Service Award on March 13 at the seventh annual Volunteer Appreciation Celebration. It will be held at Luigi’s Trattoria in Downtown Farmington at 7 p.m.
“Our volunteers are a dedicated corps of individuals who support a wide range of activities offered by Downtown Farmington. Their energy and commitment are quite notable,” said Annette Knowles, DDA executive director. “We host this event to recognize their tremendous efforts and to have some fun.”
The Mary Martin Service Award is given annually to an active, registered volunteer of the DDA who has exhibited exemplary service to Downtown Farmington. After the nominations are submitted, the DDA Board of Directors makes a selection.
The outstanding group of nominees are:
• Jeff and Audrey Brown are responsible for making the volunteer headquarters a welcoming place and stocked with food and drinks for 200+ Founders Festival volunteers.
• Sarah Dickey has single-handedly planned the daytime entertainment at the Founders Festival for the past five years.
• Mike Kuntz has been volunteering at least six years, especially contributing numerous hours to coordinating the beverage service at the Harvest Moon Celebration.
• Carol Kurth is a perfect fit for the Farmington Farmers & Artisans Market information booth, where you’ll find her most Saturday mornings during the summer. She also likes to work the Founders Festival information booths.
• Bill McNeil is admired for his willingness to help at the Farmers Market, his selfless attitude and great smile. For the Harvest Moon Celebration, Bill also plays a big role in planning and setting up the beverage service. Holly Days is another event Bill has helped make successful.
• Diane Cassidy and her staff, Team Legato, are the heart and soul of Alley Regalley, an excellent, community-based charitable food and beverage tent available at the Founders Festival.
In 2005, Mary Martin was instrumental in reviving the Farmington Farmers & Artisans Market and in developing the Walter E. Sundquist Pavilion in the town center. Her dedication, ideas and passion were recognized as exceptional, so the DDA created a namesake award to recognize the tremendous efforts of its volunteer community. The pavilion Martin helped to start opened a new chapter in Farmington's history and embodies her ideas and work.
The recipient of 2010 award was resident and volunteer of three years, Tammy Dafoe, “I enjoy the people I meet volunteering. Farmington is a great community.”
There are nearly 300 active volunteers in the Farmington Main Street Program.

Volunteer Farmington Farmers & Artisans Market Manager Makes it Official

(Farmington, MI January 25, 2012) A familiar face will be coordinating the happenings at the 2012 Farmington Farmers & Artisans Market when the season opens on Saturday, May 5. Walter Gajewski, who managed the market last year as a volunteer, has been named the contracted Market Manager. The Farmington DDA board of directors approved Gajewski’s one-year contract at its January 23, 2012 meeting.
“I’m grateful for the invitation and opportunity to return as Market Manager. I’m really looking forward to bringing back all the lessons I learned - from vendors to volunteers - starting with opening day”, stated Gajewski.
The decision to retain Gajewski in a compensated position is well-warranted, according to DDA Executive Director Annette Knowles. “Many improvements and accomplishments have been achieved since Walt took the reins in 2011.”
Among them include reorganization of the market for greater efficiency, reintroducing music as a result of increased sponsorships, attraction of many new vendors which increased the diversity and quality of the product mix and growth in the number of market volunteers and their activity level.
Gajewski conducted a 2011 wrap-up presentation at the meeting detailing the successes of the market during his tenure. At the top of the list was his willingness to assume the position as a volunteer during 2011, a move that improved the financial position of the market.
A LOOK BACK AT 2011
Transitioning to a new manager in 2011 required a plan of action with a road map of achievable markers.
The season started off with a plan in mind. A list of goals was created and the market was managed to those goals: improve market financials, improve market layout and flow, improve market communications, increase community support & awareness, and support the DDA “destination city” objective.
Visible changes were evident with 90 feet on the north side of the Walter E. Sundquist Pavilion being used for additional vendor booth space. This approach gave more visibility to the market from Grand River Avenue. S3 Architecture, along with input from various stakeholders, helped create a “retail” feel to the market, integrating growers and artisans in a more walkable space.
The word about the market was expanded out with more customer touchpoints: season long banners in town, a Farmers Market Facebook page, a regular schedule of advertising along with weekly press releases, a newly-created market brochure listing all the vendors, sponsors and market activities for the season, and co-promotion with The Old Winery Market, now in its second year.
FRIENDS OF THE MARKET
2011 ushered in a strong outreach for volunteers via the Friends of the Market, who assisted in key areas that make the market what it is today. Managed by Walt Gajewski and coordinated by Melissa Andrade, DDA Board Member and Main Street Organization Committee Chair, the Friends were critical to the success of the market.
“Friends revamped the market newsletter which also included Vendor Profiles so customers could learn more about the farmer or crafter that they shop from to get an in-depth perspective on what it takes to create and produce their unique item. The Friends were crucial in keeping the community in the know on activities and events by passing out market and community information at the Market Information booth and conducting merchandise and ticket sales. The needs didn’t stop there. Arriving at 6:30am to help with market setup and then doing teardown at the end of market day at 2 pm until 3:30 pm or later, a core crew of Friends lent their backs and smiles to the vendors and market related activities,” boasted Andrade.
Three popular market activities - Cookin’ at the Market, Little Sprouts Kids Korner, and the weekly Market Basket Giveaway - required the Friends for both onsite help and planning.
The Friends of the Market gave a glimpse into the customers attending the market by collecting metrics such as attendance and zip code information. Collected eleven times over the course of the 29 market weeks, an average attendance figure of close to 3500 per week was established with the market hitting record breaking attendance achieving over 4000 patrons on a few occasions – a first in market history.
IMPROVING THE BOTTOM LINE

A plan was put into place for profitability of the market. The average number of vendors was increased from 24 to 35 onsite weekly, a 46% increase. More sponsorships were solicited to provide additional funding for programs, such as the Music at the Market series. The sponsorships grew 15 fold from 2010. Total revenue from an increased number of onsite vendors plus those sponsor funds gave the market a total revenue increase of 120% over 2010. The market was in a position to no longer need a Farmington DDA subsidy.
As a result of these actions, the market realized record revenue, record sponsor support, record numbers of vendors, record attendance, and record number of market events.
NOTE: Walter Gajewski has resigned from the Farmington DDA Board of Directors to accept the position of compensated Market Manager.

Andrade Fills Farmington DDA Board Vacancy

FARMINGTON, MI (September 27, 2011) Melissa Andrade, Farmington resident and founder/teacher of Silver Tree Yoga, was recently appointed to the Farmington Downtown Development Authority Board of Directors. Andrade filled the vacancy created when Michele Jakacki resigned. Melissa’s term will run through February, 2013. “I’m so impressed with the people of this community that I thought it was time to deepen my commitment to them,” explained Andrade.

She joined the DDA Main Street Organization Committee as a volunteer approximately two years ago, is a member of the committee’s Downtown Farmington Press Corps and especially noteworthy, the Volunteer Coordinator for DDA events. During the past year Andrade has been instrumental in organizing, managing and growing the volunteer base which supports DDA events, such as the upcoming Sept. 22-24 Harvest Moon Celebration. “Last year I was extremely impressed that of the 186 volunteers for this event, only two were unable to keep their commitment to assist. This is a fine example of the wonderful community support in Farmington,” continued Andrade.

Another key factor in her decision was the personal respect and support Andrade received from Barbara Hatch of Barbara Hatch School of Dance, and Mike Greer of Mike Greer Photography, when she approached them to use their facilities for her Silver Tree Yoga classes. “It amazes me how helpful and generous both individuals are in assisting me to grow my small business in Downtown Farmington,” shared Andrade. “I am hopeful through my Board position that I may assist other start-up small businesses in a similar fashion.”

“My area of expertise is in communications and writing. I was responsible for media events and press conferences for more than ten years at a large, global corporation. I’d like to help the community polish the image we present to prospective new businesses, the media, etc. We must be sure our message is clear and consistent. I would like to see us recruit businesses to downtown that will attract residents and visitors alike.”

Bob Rock is pleased Melissa’s appointment was approved by the Farmington City Council. “She will be a good addition to our Board with her strong marketing and communications background. I think she will make a real, positive contribution. What she did for the volunteer program is a fine example of her capabilities,” said Rock. “Adding a second female perspective on the Board will also be good.”

“Melissa is a welcome addition to the DDA Board,” commented Annette Knowles, DDA Executive Director. “Her contributions to Downtown Farmington already are too numerous to mention. She is a shining star in our corps of volunteers and we look forward to more improvements in communications and volunteer management with her at the table.”

Andrade has lived in Farmington for 13 years; she is married to Bradford Lowell. One reason Melissa enjoys volunteering in Farmington is how it helps her 2-1/2 year old daughter, Sofia, grow. “Sofia is often with me when I’m downtown at the Farmers Market or other events and many people regularly acknowledge her and say hello. I like to think that the community will know her and be there to watch out for her as she grows,” said Andrade.

Downtown Farmington partners with The MORE Program to match local entrepreneurs with business-building resources

Farmington, MI – Downtown Farmington is eager to build an entrepreneurial culture and has found a powerful ally in The MORE Program (Matching Opportunities and Resources for Entrepreneurs Program), a U.S. Department of Labor funded 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization supported by the New Economy Initiative. The MORE Program, based in Detroit, developed InsYght, the intuitive, web-based tool designed to match Michigan entrepreneurs with the business-building resources that they urgently need.
At no cost to the city, Downtown Farmington (the Downtown Development Authority) has partnered with The MORE Program to provide free access to the InsYght resource matchmaking platform to any entrepreneur who visits the Downtown Farmington website at www.DowntownFarmington.org
Additional InsYght portal partners include WSU’s TechTown, the Brightmoor Alliance, the City of Novi, and Walsh College. After accessing InsYght, entrepreneurs then type in what their business needs … anything from office space to accounting help, and InsYght instantly provides them with listings of available resources that most closely match the startup’s need, both substantively and geographically.
“Downtown Farmington is an innovative, resourceful community with very strong and impressive entrepreneurial outreach capabilities,” states MORE Program Executive Director Ken Agacinski, “And we couldn’t be more thrilled than to have InsYght available to their citizens, free of charge, on the Downtown Farmington website. With thousands of easy-to-find catalogued resources, InsYght will help Downtown Farmington-affiliated entrepreneurs find exactly what they need, almost instantly, to turn their big ideas into real, money-making businesses.”
“InsYght is destined to become a valuable service to our business community,” explained Annette Knowles, Farmington DDA Executive Director. “Too often, finding resources can seem daunting, but InsYght has made it simple to gain access to thousands of worthwhile business assistance programs. We are proud to partner with the MORE Program to offer this beneficial tool that will help our businesses grow.”
At full strength, InsYght will serve as a portal to over 26,000 available resources for Michigan entrepreneurs. Says Agacinski, “InsYght can direct you to the organizations that have the exact resources you need to help your business. Do you need information about how to incorporate? Ask InsYght and in seconds you’ll know where to find it. Or lab space? Certain chemicals? Skilled workers? Ask InsYght, and you’ll have full access to Michigan’s many resources.”
For nearly a year, The MORE Program has been gathering data on resources throughout the state. To use InsYght, the user accesses the system through the portal and creates a profile of his or her company, including the desired resources, from workspace to human capital. InsYght does the rest, supplying specific information to connect the user to the available resources.
InsYght is free and available to anyone looking to start or grow their business in Michigan. Soon it will be accessible on the websites of many, if not all, of the organizations whose resources are included in the system.
For additional information regarding InsYght and The MORE Program, please contact Mike Gentile at 313-223-4402.

MI Apple Trail at Farmers Market

Farmington, MI. (July 27, 2011). July 30 heralds the opening of a stop along the MI (“my”) Apple Trail in Downtown Farmington.

The MI Apple Trail is a public art project sponsored by Eastern Market in Detroit that features four foot tall, 3-dimensional apples that will be decorated by local artists and displayed at farmers markets throughout southeast Michigan through mid-September.

The project aims to help promote a bountiful crop of Michigan apples and the great farmers markets that serve Oakland, Wayne and Genesee Counties.

Downtown Farmington’s edition will be on display on the grounds of George F. Riley Park, near the Walter E. Sundquist Pavilion, home of the Farmington Farmers & Artisans Market for about six weeks.

Part of the project includes a Passport Program. Passports will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis at participating markets. Individuals who visit five different markets to have their passports validated will be eligible to enter a drawing for great prizes. Simply drop your completed passport in the mail.

At the end of the project, decorated apples will be harvested and returned to Eastern Market to be showcased with the whole peck until the Apple Gala and Auction in October. Proceeds from the auction of the apples will be returned to the farmers market from where it originated.

Downtown Farmington Artist Profile

The husband-and-wife duo of Geoff and Marty Merrill are the talented artists who volunteered to decorate the apple which will be displayed in Downtown Farmington. The Merrill’s make their home in Farmington Hills.

Marty is a frequent vendor at the Farmington market, where she sells hand-made necklaces, bracelets and earrings at the Jewelry Cottage. It was she who connected with the Farmington Downtown Development Authority when a call for artists was announced. Marty is a graphic artist who opened MacMarty Advertising with her late mother, Dorothy McLean, in 1968. She obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Wayne State University.

Geoff is a respected contemporary artist whose works have been on display at some of the finest Michigan fine arts competitions, including the Detroit Artists’ Market, Detroit Institute of Arts and Wayne State University. Geoff is a graduate of Wayne State University (incidentally, where he met his wife over 30 years ago) and previously studied painting in Florence, Italy.

“I applaud the Merrill’s for taking on this fantastic project,” said Annette Knowles, DDA Executive Director. “They were so enthusiastic and so creative with their ideas for the apple, I knew right away they were perfect candidates for the job. I am confident this will become a terrific piece that will endear the community.”

Although no date has been announced, the Merrill’s will receive public recognition at a future market for their contributions.

“Taking on this project was a huge commitment. We really appreciate the Merrill’s efforts to put the polish on our big apple.”

Grand River Avenue Streetscape Lands APWA Awards

FARMINGTON, MI (June 15, 2011). Farmington residents can be proud and congratulations to all who had a part in the creation of the Grand River Avenue Streetscape! The Streetscape has received the American Public Works Association (APWA) Award for Historic Preservation from the local APWA branch. In addition, the Michigan Chapter awarded the Grand River Avenue Streetscape the Project of the Year 2010 in the category of Streetscape Less than $5 Million.
The Project of the Year award was presented to Kevin Gushman, Director of Public Services, City of Farmington, at the APWA Michigan Chapter annual conference at Shanty Creek in Bellaire, MI. “It’s an honor to receive recognition from one’s peers throughout the state,” stated Gushman.
Roberto J. Scappaticci was the Project Manager with Orchard Hiltz & McCliment, Inc., the engineering consultant on the Streetscape, who submitted the nomination to the Michigan chapter. Relevance in consideration for the award included * High volume pedestrian/vehicle intersection, * Pedestrian signal design, * Public process, * Urban, multi-modal intersection improvements, * Complex pedestrian and vehicle circulation at DDA, * Non-motorized pathway, * MDOT funding and grant application, * Traffic modeling and * Aesthetic improvements.
Grissim Metz Andriese Associates was the landscape architecture firm. It was their planning that tied the brick paver design and other features to the historic buildings in downtown. Susan L. Grissim, ASLA, Principal and Director of Operations, is quoted as saying, "Our main goal was to customize the Streetscape to enhance Farmington’s identity. We had numerous early morning design meetings with the Farmington DDA Main Street Design Committee to review all aspects of the new streetscape design. Because space was limited, we really focused on making each area fit to the existing buildings and uses to maximize Farmington’s character and usability for all. Another bonus is that the businesses embraced the updates and stepped up with numerous enhancements to their properties."
Rounding out major contributors to the project was the firm of Willson Steinkopf, who did the plantings.
These APWA awards are in addition to the 2010 Michigan Plaque awarded to the Grand River Avenue Streetscape by Keep Michigan Beautiful, Inc. Later in the year, according to Gushman, the Streetscape will also be considered for an award at the national level of the American Publics Works Association.

Loyal Customer Card Makes Debut

Look inside your mailbox or your favorite Downtown Farmington business for the Downtown Farmington Loyal Customer Card, which debuts this week. In addition to being available at participating downtown businesses, cards have been inserted in more than 22,000 copies of the Main St. Messenger, which is direct-mailed to Farmington and Farmington Hills residences in zip codes 48335 and 48336. The biannual newsletter, published by the Farmington Downtown Development Authority, is an excellent source of information about what’s happening in Downtown Farmington.
Using the Loyal Customer Card will be easy. Simply show the card when making a purchase at a participating business to receive an award exclusive to cardholders. It could be an instant discount, a free item, a 2-for-1 or other special offer. For example, Focal Point Studio of Photography will offer 8 free wallet portraits with the purchase of a portrait package.
“Focal Point and all the participating businesses are excited and extremely grateful that the Farmington DDA is sponsoring this promotion. The cost of a direct mail piece to 22,000 homes is costly for one business to absorb,” said Michele Jakacki, who along with her husband Jerry, own Focal Point, a mainstay Downtown Farmington photography studio offering custom portraiture along with old-fashioned customer service for more than 38 years. “Not only will this program benefit local businesses, it will be great for customers too. Just by showing their Loyal Customer Card when making a purchase, they will be rewarded with an exclusive, worthwhile special.”
Businesses accepting the card include: Bellis Therapeutic Spa, Beyond Salon, Clothes Encounters, Cromwell Family Chiropractic, Dagwood's Deli, Darrell's Firestone, Edible Arrangements, Farmers Insurance - Pniewski Agency, Farmington Center Florist, Focal Point Studio of Photography, Gary Lentz - Attorney at Law, Ginger's Café, Ilda's Salon Chic, John Cowley & Sons, Legato Salon, Lowen-Stoller Chiropractic Clinic, M. Mazzoni Jewelers, Majestic Designs, Merle Norman, Page's Food and Spirits, Ruby Blu Salon, Synergy Home Care, The Olive Grove, The Vines Flower Shop, Tranquil Touch Therapeutic Massage for Women, Tre Sorelle Boutique and Victorian Lace Elegance.
“Our list of participating businesses continues to grow,” boasted DDA Executive Director Annette Knowles. “We are hopeful that the greater Farmington community will embrace the card and the concept of shopping locally.”
The reward card is being rolled out by the Farmington DDA to introduce new customers to Downtown Farmington and to thank loyal customers for shopping, dining and doing business locally. Patty Williams, one of the three sisters and mom who own Tre Sorelle, a boutique offering unique jewelry, handbags and home décor including many one-of-a-kind imported items, considers use the card an opportunity for residents and downtown businesses to work together to support the local community.
“I realize we all have choices throughout the area as to where we shop, dine and do business. I’m hoping the card will remind people to check locally first. A viable Downtown Farmington business community in turn helps support stable residential property values, a win-win for all.” A healthy Downtown Farmington business climate is also more inviting to other new and exciting ventures looking for a great location.
For a list of the most current participants, visit DowntownFarmington.org, look for an identifying window decal or ask a business if it is part of the program. Frequent Facebook followers will learn the latest news about the Downtown Farmington Loyal Customer Card when they visit the Downtown Farmington page.

He is the owner of Thayer-Rock Funeral Home and lifelong Farmington resident. Rock joins returning Vice-President Steve Schneemann, proprietor of S3 Architecture, PLLC, and Secretary Dan Higgins, owner of Visibles Marketing.

In accordance with its by-laws, the DDA conducts an election of officers at its regular meeting each March. This year’s election was held on March 28.

Rock was appointed to the DDA in 2007 and has presided for the past year. In his leadership role he continues to work toward improving communications and encouraging volunteerism.

“Bob and his executive team are our all-stars,” said Annette Knowles, DDA Executive Director. “Their careful guidance and leadership are keeping us focused and headed in a positive direction.”

Rock intends to support the DDA’s important work of promoting the downtown to visitors and new businesses even in a year when many are concerned about the economy. With the Grand River Avenue Streetscape completed and an active calendar of events in place, Rock’s goals as President are to help businesses succeed by attracting more people to the downtown, to market the downtown as an opportunity for new businesses and to expand the volunteer base to support the DDA’s Main Street Program.

“We need to be sensitive to what is going on in our town,” Rock said. “We are working to partner with our businesses, help our businesses expand and help them to begin the kinds of initiatives that they otherwise cannot afford to launch. We would like to share DDA resources with the community to strengthen partnerships with businesses that are struggling or those that have ideas they are unable to act upon.”

Rock also mentioned the importance of attracting people to Downtown Farmington for Farmington’s events as well as the DDA’s efforts to work on business recruitment.

Tammy Dafoe Named Volunteer of the Year

The Farmington Downtown Development Authority (DDA) announced the winner of its 2010 Mary Martin Service Award on March 8 – Farmington Hills resident and volunteer of three years, Tammy Dafoe. The award is given annually to a volunteer in the Main Street Program who has exhibited exemplary service to Downtown Farmington.
The sixth annual volunteer celebration was held at Page’s Food & Spirits in Downtown Farmington. Over 60 volunteers attended.
Dafoe was driven to volunteer when quitting her job in 2008 – to pursue her master’s degree – left her with some extra time. “I wanted to use that time to help the community and its local businesses,” she said. Tammy now volunteers and holds two part-time jobs.

“I enjoy the people I meet volunteering. Farmington is a great community,” she concluded.
Anyone who wants to see evidence of Tammy’s hard work can log onto www.DowntownFarmington.org. For more than a year, Tammy led the Web site redesign committee for the DDA. She also finds time to volunteer at all of Farmington’s events.
Also nominated for the award were Melissa Andrade, Pete Hubbard and Mark Knowles.
The Farmington DDA has grown its volunteer database to include more than 200 volunteers, but is still in search of helpful people.
To kick off the 2011 calendar of events, a volunteer pep rally is tentatively slated for May 17. Anyone is welcome to come and assess the volunteer opportunities.

Downtown Projects Honored at County Event

Representatives from the Farmington Downtown Development Authority were on-hand to accept two recognition awards at the Main Street Main Event, held on Friday, March 4, 2011.
Receiving honors were the Village Mall, Outstanding Façade - Building Rehabilitation (Over $50,000) in the Design category, and the Grand River Avenue Streetscape Promotion Campaign, Outstanding Brand & Imaging Campaign, in the Promotion category.
Main Street Oakland County (MSOC) hosts the Main Event each year to celebrate achievements made toward revitalizing the downtowns of its participating communities. Numerous awards are given in each of four categories, Organization, Design, Promotion and Economic Restructuring. Communities must complete a rigorous application process to nominate a project or program for an award. Selections based on merit are made by a panel of individuals named by MSOC.
The Village Mall
The partners in the Farmington Holding Company agreed it was the perfect time to take a bit of a financial risk, piggyback on the excitement of the newly completed downtown Streetscape and invest in a major renovation of the exterior of the Village Mall. The approved design honors the historic features of the original 1921 bank building while giving the Village Mall an attractive, new look. The completed renovation supplies a significant piece to the improvement of downtown Farmington. It again presents Farmington with a worthy focal building at the main intersection of town, Grand River Avenue and Farmington Road.
"Farmington Holding Company is pleased to have completed a project that compliments the streetscape,” reflected Managing Partner David Cornwell, who was quick to identify other contributors to the project.
“A large part of the recognition should go to Steve Schneemann and S3 Architecture for its creative work,” said Cornwell. “We would like to thank the City of Farmington for its willingness to accommodate our work crews who were forced at times to barricade sidewalks and interrupt traffic patterns to get the job done.”
Ideas were generated for the façade project when Cornwell participated in the Design Assistance Program sponsored by Main Street Oakland County. The project also was a recipient of financial assistance through the Farmington DDA’s Façade Incentive Program.
Grand River Avenue Streetscape Promotion Campaign
In May, 2009, work on the Grand River Avenue Streetscape began in Downtown Farmington. To keep the community informed and excited about the project, the Farmington DDA executed the “It’s Happening” promotion campaign. The campaign included print materials, giveaways, a web site, a video, a retail promotion and special events geared toward creating a positive image and enthusiasm for a construction project, which normally is seen as an inconvenience and deterrent to business. Residents, merchants and volunteers united to make Downtown a “happening” place while the 9-month project progressed. The result was a well-informed public and an active business climate.
“We’re so excited to receive this award,” said Dana Dunlop, former DDA Promotions Assistant. “Working on the streetscape promotion was so rewarding. It helped to keep the community engaged and inspired during the project and to support the downtown businesses during construction.”
The program was so popular and recognizable that the Farmington DDA continues to capitalize on the momentum the “It’s Happening” campaign created.
Each awardee was given a plaque featuring a unique Pewabic pottery tile in a distressed wood frame.

New Downtown Farmington Web Site Goes Live

The Farmington Downtown Development Authority unveiled a refreshed version of its web site on December 28, 2010. The new site is bright, vibrant and user-friendly. It is overflowing with information, all of which can be accessed from the home page. Navigation is simple. The search function is available on every page, and returning to the home page is as simple as clicking on the web site logo.
The primary categories, About Downtown, Food & Entertainment, Shops & Services and Downtown Events, are perfect for visitors and residents when looking for something to do or somewhere to shop. Upcoming events are posted on the home page and on the calendar under Downtown Events. The business directory can be accessed from both the About Downtown and Shops & Services tabs. History buffs will enjoy the historical information found under About Downtown.
People considering Downtown Farmington to locate a new business can find relevant data under Doing Business, including available properties, business incentives and pertinent demographics. Businesses that want excellent name exposure through sponsorship and advertising opportunities will want to investigate Downtown Events and the Main St. Messenger, a downloadable version of the Farmington DDA biannual newsletter.
There’s a Volunteer tab for those who would like to become part of the superb corps of volunteers that is a vital component in the success of Downtown Farmington. The new site is a good example of the importance of such volunteer contributions. An ad hoc committee began the process of improving the web site in early 2010. A primary goal was to have the web site match the friendliness and vitality of Downtown Farmington, similar to the rejuvenation achieved when the award-winning Grand River Avenue Streetscape was completed. Tammy Dafoe chaired, and Scott Freeman, Dan Higgins, Jessica Robbins, Marc Wojtowicz and Annette Knowles completed the Web Site Committee. They reviewed six proposals from web site developers and interviewed three finalists. WebAscender of Okemos, MI was chosen to develop and host the site. They offer a CMS (Content Management System) platform and DotNetNuke, an open source software, that offer much flexibility and opportunity for future expansion. A neat, new feature offered today allows the uploading of Downtown Farmington photos. Also with a click of an icon, one can check out Downtown Farmington on Facebook. All of this is possible at www.DowntownFarmington.org --- It’s Happening!
